YORKTOWN runs aground in Detroit River (updated)

The mv YORKTOWN carrying 120 people became stranded Saturday night in the Detroit River.

The 216-foot cruise ship ran aground at about 8:15 p.m. in U.S. waters near Wyandotte and Fighting Island, a Canadian island. The vessel was not listing or taking on water and there were no evacuations or injuries reported.

A tugboat was called to free the ship and since, the YORKTOWN has been pulled safely back to the shores of Detroit to a pier by the Renaissance Center for inspection.  She was then sent on her way and as of 3 a.m. had arrived at Cleveland, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Those familiar with the section of the river where the ship ran aground said that it gets very shallow in spots, as little as 3 feet, especially in the area of Wyandotte.

The ship was on an eight-day journey calling at Cleveland, Montreal and Quebec City.
